The Shulchan Aruch says, “ראוי לכל ירא שמים להיות מצר ודואג על חורבן בית המקדש” – “It is worthy for every Yerei Shamayim, to be sad and to worry about the Churban Beis Hamikdash.”

The question is, why is this Halachah addressed to the “Yerei Shamayim”? Of course, a Yerei Shamayim is supposed to do so, but no other Halachah is addressed to a Yerei Shamayim, because every Yid should be a Yerei Shamayim.

The Chidushei Harim says something astonishing. “Someone who is not a Yerei Shamayim should be sad and worry about their “own Churban” – which is their lack of Yiras Shamayim!

This vort sounds like just a good quip, but really it’s also teaching us something very deep about the Churban Beis Hamikdash.

The Churban Beis Hamikdash is not about a certain building far away, a long time ago. The Beis Hamikdash is the purpose of the whole creation of the world and it’s the purpose of every Yid’s Torah and Mitzvos.

The Beis Hamikdash was a place of “השראת השכינה” on this earthly world. The point of our whole Avodas Hashem and the point of creation, is that Hashem’s presence should be revealed in this world. When there is revelation of Hashem in this world, everything is perfect and in line with its purpose.

Creation is in essence perfect and our Neshamos are in essence perfect, but sin and misguidance turn us away from our true essence – to be connected to Hashem. When there is השראת השכינה and revelation of Hashem, there is Yiras Shamayim and all the highest levels of Ruchniyus. Also in Gashmiyus, everything is as it should be when there is השראת השכינה.

That’s why, for someone who doesn’t have Yiras Shamayim, crying over their own lack of Yiras Shamayim and spirituality is also part and parcel of the Churban Beis Hamikdash. The same is with all Tzaros of Yidden, spiritual and physical. They are really Tzaros of the Shechinah and are part of the Churban Beis Hamikdash and lack of Kevod Shamayim in this world.

We start with crying over the brokenness we are most familiar with, then we go on to see it in the greater picture of lack of Kevod Shamayim in the world. The lack of having a Beis Hamikdash and of Kevod Shamayim is an overwhelming Tzarah and brokenness. By feeling our own Tzaros and connecting it with the greater lack of Kevod Shamayim, we can start feeling and appreciating the greater Churban in the world.

So it is with hope and anticipation. All our hopes, striving, and anticipations that we have in Ruchniyus and Gashmiyus, are a drop of the greater hope and anticipation that the world is hoping for את צמח דוד עבדך מהרה תצמיח. As the Berachah finishes, כי לישועתך קוינו כל היום!

May we all be Zoche to be Yerei Shamayim and be מצר ודואג on the Churban Beis Hamikdash. And, “כל המתאבל על ירושלים, זוכה ורואה בבנינה”, we should be Zoche to see it speedily in our days.
