Can parents discipline a child in areas that the parents themselves are not fully serious about it? (example: coming on time to Daven)
The Belzer Rebbe was asked this question from the Israeli Psychologist, R’ Aaron Friedman.
The Rebbe Shlit”a answered that it depends. In an area that the parents struggle but fully believe in its virtue and try to be better at it, then the children will not look at their parents as hypocritical. In such a case, the parents should encourage their children to do the right thing just as they try encouraging themselves. But in an area that the parents are very far from doing, then to insist that the child should do it, can backfire on the Chinuch of the child.
