Sometimes we feel that Pesach, Shavuos, and Sukkos are better times to connect with Hashem. The three Yom Tovim are days of Ahavah not Yirah, and some people feel more open and refreshed on these Yom Tovim rather than Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The Avodas Yisroel explains beautifully how the days of Yirah and Din are really days of great connection with Hashem.

He explains that there are two ways Hashem sends Shefa and sustains the world. One is in a way of just giving sustenance in a general manner without a kesher and relationship with creation. This way doesn’t distinguish between good and bad and isn’t judged according to the person. The Shefa through this way doesn’t bring a person closer to Hashem, because it’s in a way of indifference. There is no relationship between the giver and the receiver. The Shefa comes about just because Hashem created the world and He wants to continue to sustain it in a general sense, but not for the interest of the particular creature.

The other way is like a relationship between parents and a child. Parents gives for a child not only for survival but as an expression of love of the parents to their child. It’s not general sustenance that the parents provide; it’s a gift that the parents want to provide for their child.

The Shefa and sustenance that parents give creates a bond and relationship with their child. The child acknowledges the gifts and its provider, which in turn further cements the bond. In this case the actual sustenance becomes a conduit for the relationship. True- the sustenance is very important, but the bond that it brings is far greater.

This way is according with Din, because it is dependent on the recipient and differentiates between a child and someone who is not a child. It depends on the level of closeness the child is with his/her parents. The parents would always have Rachamim on the child, but the more the child is closer the stronger the relationship is.

Rosh Hashanah, continues the Avodas Yisroel, is the anniversary of creation. Every year creation repeats. Although the world will continue to exist as Hashem decreed so upon the original creation, every year it is weighed how the Shefa should come about; the first way or the second. The Umos Ha’olam want it should be in a way that there is no relationship, because in that case they are the same as Am Yisroel, creatures of Hashem. In such a case the world drifts further from Hashem since the Shefa is not a conduit to a bond with Hashem (In Kabbalah it is called “בחי’ אחוריים”), which is what the Umos Ha’olam want.

Whereas Klal Yisroel say ה’ אלקי ישראל מלך, Hashem our G-d is the King of the universe. We are children and Hashem is our father. The Shefa should come in a way of Din, where there is a difference between Am Yisroel and Umos Ha’olam and we deserve it because we are the children of Hashem and the children of the Avraham, Yitzchok, and Ya’akov. In such a way Hashem’s presence will be more revealed in the world because the Shefa will be a conduit and a tool to further our bond with Hashem.

What good is Shefa if it’s in a way that makes the world farther from Hashem. Of course, we want and need the Shefa, but we want the closeness that the Shefa will bring even more.

With this the Avodas Yisroel explains what is said in Kabbalah that the Shofar is Me’orer the Din. We want the Din, and we are excited for Rosh Hashanah, because that is what we are all about, creating a bond with Hashem.

Ideally the way of Din will prevail fully and Mashiach will come. Till Mashiach comes both ways exist in the world. The more that we have the way of Din, the more revealed the presence of Hashem will be during the year and the better it will be Be’ruchnius and Be’gashmius.

On Sukkos we grasp the Lulavim which is a sign that we are children of Hashem and that the way of the bond with Hashem won. (As we’ll further explore before Sukkos)
