CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת כי תצא
Parshas Ki Seitzei
אבן שלמה וצדק יהיה לך (כי תצא כה:טו)
A perfect and honest weight shall you have.
One year during the Mekubal (Kabbalist) Reb Chaim Shaul Dweck zt”l times, there was a harsh drought in the land. There was no rain and the fields did not grow any produce. The Yidden fasted and davened to Hashem, but nothing helped. Reb Chaim Shual dreamed one night that he should ask the town’s grocer to daven on behalf of the townspeople and rain would fall in his merit.
The following day, Reb Chaim Shaul announced that everyone had to fast and daven in shul all day. The community wondered what was different today: “We fasted and davened so much, but nothing helped. It must be that the Rav has a valid reason for this special gathering.”
The community gathered in Shul and Reb Chaim Shaul recited several psalms of Tehillim, looked through the crowd and gazed at the grocer sitting in a corner. He summoned the grocer to lead the Tehillim, to which the grocer retorted: “Who am I to represent Klal Yisroel in time of need?” The community also wondered at Reb Chaim Shaul’s choice of leader.
It took some time for the grocer to agree, but he first requested to go home to bring his special Siddur.
The community members waited for the grocer to return. To their great astonishment, he returned to Shul holding the grocer’s scale in his hands and saying that this was his siddur—prayer book.
The grocer raised the scale-up high and exclaimed: “Ribbono Shel Olam! (Master of the universe) I was taught that your name is etched on the scale, listing the letters of the holy name of HaShem:
The letter “י” represents the stick above the base
The letter “ה” represents the bowl of the scale
The letter “ו” represents the base of the scale
The letter “ה” represents the second bowl
“You HaShem – continued the grocer with alacrity – bear witness to the fact that this scale never transgressed the prohibition of theft! Please! In this merit, shower upon us blessed rain!”.
Even before finishing his heartfelt plea, thick clouds covered the sky, and rains of blessing and salvation started pouring down!
