CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת אמור
Parshas Emor
אך בעשור לחודש השביעי הזה יום כיפורים…ועניתם את נפשתיכם…(אמור כג:כז)
But on the tenth day of this seventh month, it is the Day of Atonement…and you shall afflict yourselves.
The Tarnopler Rav, Reb Menachem Manish Babad zt’’l, related how he connected to Belz and became a Chassid:
His father-in-law was a chashuv Belz Chassid and served as a Rav in a city. He sent Reb Menachem Manish to Belz one Rosh Hashana and told him to return right after Yom Tov, since he needed his help answering halachic questions from the many townsfolk preceding Yom Kippur.
After traveling to Belz for a few years to spend Rosh Hashanah, the Tarnopler Rav desired to stay one Yom Kippur. He was destitute and hardly ate, which weakened him. During the Yom Kippur davening, he started not feeling well and fainted. Fellow congregants revived him, and he found himself outside the holy Belz Shul with several Dayanim around him who gave a p’sak-halachic verdict on how to give him to eat.
Suddenly, Reb Menachem Manish heard the voice of Maran Reb Aharon of Belz zt’’l saying the Avodah of Yom Kippur, which was heard as a lion’s roar. The Tarnopler Rav felt infused with fresh strength from the Rav’s voice, got up, and returned inside the Shul amongst the mispallalim worshipers. He remained seated inside until Motzei Yom Kippur without feeling any hunger pangs or weakness.
