The Chofetz Chaim zt’’l owned a grocery for a time after his wedding, and his wife ran the business while he sat and learned in the Beis Medrash. He didn’t allow the grocery to be open the whole day, saying “half a day is enough, other groceries also need to have business.”

When he noticed that everyone in town shopped at their grocery, he was afraid of הסגת גבול – overstepping a fellow’s parnassah, and he told his wife that they need to keep the front door to the streets closed; it will be enough if only our neighbors, who can use the back door, shop by us.

The Chofetz Chaim many times told his customers that he wasn’t sure his merchandise was fresh and he believes that they will get their money’s worth from a different grocer…
