CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת בהעלותך
Parshas Behaaloscha
ואמרת אליו בהעלתך את הנרות (בהעלותך ח:ב)
And say to him: When you kindle the lamps. The Divre Chaim of Tzanz zt”l related that the Rebbe Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk zt”l once went to the mikvah in the middle of the night, and the candle that was lighting the way was almost extinguished. Reb Elimelech told his shamash (personal assistant) to break off a piece of ice and light it. “מי שאמר לשמן שידלוק יאמר לחומץ וידלוק” – alluding to the story that is brought in the Gemara (תענית כה:א) when the daughter of Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa mistakenly put vinegar in the Shabbos candles, instead of oil, her saintly father consoled her, saying: “The One who commanded oil to burn shall command the vinegar to burn.” Here, too: The One who commanded the candle to burn, He shall command the icicle to burn bright.
The chunk of ice burned like a torch, lighting their way and lasting until their return from the mikvah. The shamash’s hands were wet from the burning ice he held.
