Chassidishe Story
והטור השלישי לשם שבו ואחלמה (תצוה כח:יט)
This pasuk describes the חושן’s stones – each of the twelve was a different color for each tribe.
A close friend of R’ Ephraim Zalman Margulies of Brodt zt’’l approached him for advice on a prospective shidduch for his son. The girl in question came from a reputable home and was very fine and pious. He hesitated to proceed with the shidduch because the prospective bride’s father’s brother strayed from the Jewish path. Should he do the shidduch or not?
Reb Ephraim Zalman told him he should proceed with the shidduch and reference to the words used to describe the חושן’s stones. “לשם, שבו, ואחלמה” – you should only look at “לשם שבו” – on the good name of the father and bride. “ואח-למה” – why do you have to care what the brother looks like?
