CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת חיי שרה
Parshas Chayei Sara
ותקח הצעיף ותתכס (חיי שרה כד:סה)
She then took the veil and covered herself.
A Yid came to the Bilgoray Rav zt”l, complaining that despite his efforts, he was struggling to make a living, as he was not finding sufficient parnassah (livelihood). The Bilgoray Rav responded, “If you promise me that your wife will start dressing by the proper tzniyus (modesty) standards, I promise you that you will have parnassah easily.”
To support his words, the Bilgoray Rav brought proof from the pasuk: “ותקח הצעיף ותתכס”—”She took the veil and covered herself.” The word “צעיף” (veil) can be interpreted as an acronym for “עמך ישראל צריכין פרנסה”—”The Jewish people need livelihood.” The pasuk then continues, “ותתכס”—” and she covered herself,” which alludes to the concept of tzniyus. The Bilgoray Rav explained that by adhering to the proper standards of modesty (tzniyus), one would merit parnassah.
