CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת משפטים
Parshas Mishpatim
אם כסף תלוה את עמי את העני עמך… (משפטים כב:כד)
When you lend money to My people, to the poor person who is with you…
A Yid from Radin approached the Chofetz Chaim zt”l about a calamity he was facing. His children would die, one by one, at a very young age, and he was at a loss as to how to change his dire situation.
The Chofetz Chaim answered him short and to the point: “I don’t know any Segulos – good omens, all I can tell you is that you should involve yourself in Chessed – good deeds and Hashem will help you by doing good to you.
The Yid listened to the suggestion and started a Gemach that offered interest-free loans, which ended up lending enormous sums of money to those in need. He added a clause to the constitution of the Gemach: Once every three years when the Parsha of Mishpatim is read “אם כסף תלוה” – he would make a big seudah – meal for those who partake in this mitzvah and busy themselves volunteering themselves or their surplus funds to help out the needy.
A few years went by, and the wife of this Yid gave birth to a healthy, strong baby in the week of Parshas Mishpatim. In the years that followed, they were blessed with a few more children – all healthy and strong.
A while later, the Yid came to the Chofetz Chaim saying that he doesn’t have too much time to devote to the Gemach if he can perhaps give over the job of managing the Gemach to another person.
The Chofetz Chaim tried to dissuade him, but after the Yid begged, he acquiesced, and the Yid handed over the reins to another person.
The following day the Yid came running to the Chofetz Chaim, crying that one of his children had become critically ill and was in desperate need of a yeshuah – salvation. The Chofetz Chaim told him to dismiss the newly appointed administrator and resume his role as the administrator of the Gemach. As soon as he did so, the child became better.
