CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת וירא
Parshas Vayera
אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניך אל נא תעבור מעל עבדיך… (וירא יח:ג)
If I find favor in Your eyes now, please pass not away from your servant.
The Frierdige Rav zt’l once asked the grandchildren of Reb Meir Gross a”h (known for being very meticulous in the Mitzvah of Hachnasas Orchim – hosting guests) what their grandfather would serve his guests. They replied: “Bean soup.” The Frierdiga Rav exclaimed: “This is how it should be. With such food, one can fulfill the mitzvah of Hachnasas Orchim because with meat, one cannot properly fulfill this mitzvah.” Since, at that time, the price of meat was relatively high, and if he had been serving meat, each guest would receive a small portion and stay hungry.
