CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת שלח
Parshas Shlach
ארץ אוכלת יושביה… (שלח יג:לב)
A land that devours its inhabitants.| Once upon a time, a Yid came to take leave from the Chofetz Chaim as he was about to emigrate to America. He explained his reason for leaving the old country, as life across the ocean is much easier – especially as the government gives its citizens generous help.
The Chofetz Chaim said: “Stuffed ducklings are so grateful to their owners for the generous food that they are being fed, only they are not aware what awaits them once they reach a certain girth size…” Implying that the benefits of living in America come at a cost; the government of the US does not have the welfare of its citizens at heart, and the price they expect you to pay for their help comes in the form of the spiritual dangers lurking at every street corner of the Goldene Medinah!
