CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת ויצא
Parshas Vayeitzei
וילך ראובן בימי קציר חיטים וימצא דודאים בשדה (ויצא ל:יד)
Reuven went out in the days of the wheat harvest: he found flowers in the field…Rashi explains that this pasuk praises the Shevatim. It was harvest time, and they didn’t take wheat from גזל – they didn’t steal, they only took from הפקר – which was free.
Two wealthy business partners entrusted their Rav, Reb Binyamin Diskin zt’’l, by keeping a large sum of money in savings in his possession. After a while, one of the partners came to Reb Binyamin and said that they were closing a great deal, and he needed to withdraw the money from the Rav to proceed with the transaction and would return the money as soon as possible.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t fulfill your request,” Reb Binyamin responded. The Yid became enraged and yelled. “Does the Rav not hold me accountable? Is my word, not a word? Does the Rav think I won’t return the money on time?”
The Rav calmed him down, saying: “Of course I trust you. But what am I to do? Your partner came to me last night with the same request, so what am I supposed to do now?
The partner started yelling at the Rav: “How can you do such a thing? My partner came to you without my knowledge. How were you able to give him our savings?”
“Calm down!” Replied Reb Binyamin with a smile. “Did I tell you that I gave your partner the money? Chas V’Shalom! I would never do such a thing. The money I received from you will only be returned when you request it together.”
The partner put his head down in shame and was awed by the trustiness of his Rav and asked his forgiveness.
