CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת משפטים
Parshas Mishpatim
רק שבתו יתן ורפא ירפא (משפטים כא:יט)
Only for his lost time shall he pay and he shall provide for healing.
The chassid R’ Chaim Boruch Fink z”l related the following story:
“My sister was ill with a weak heart. A visiting doctor wanted to prescribe her a certain medication, but she was scared that her weak heart would not be able to tolerate it. I went to Maran Reb Aharon of Belz zt”l to ask what she was to do. Maran answered: “You know that I have a kabbalah – legacy – from my father zt”l, not to advise on medical issues.”
R’ Chaim Boruch continued: “I told Maran that my sister sent me to ask this question. What should I answer her?” Maran told me again: “You know… .” So I replied again, ‘My sister sent me… ”.
Maran remarked: “My father zt”l all along did not hold the prognosis of the medical professionals in high esteem, as all they know is through looking at x-rays… ”.
“I returned to my sister and repeated what Maran Reb Aharon said. She told me there and then that she would not take the prescribed medicine. The doctor returned three days later for a routine inspection and noted that my sister became better without the medicine. He was quite relieved that she refused to use his prescription, noting that had she taken that medication, it would have placed her in a life-threatening situation.”
