CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת האזינו
Parshas Ha'azinu
שחת לו לא בניו מומם דור עקש ופתלתל (האזינו לב:ה)
Corruption is not His - the blemish is attributable to His children, a perverse and twisted generation.
Reb Simcha Bunim of Pershischa zt”l was a businessman in his younger years. His business led him to travel to Berlin, where he spent Shabbosim. One Friday night during the seudah, the wine bottles emptied, and the host ordered two of his servants to bring up more bottles of wine from the cellar. One servant was a Jew, and the other was a non-Jew.
To the astonishment of Reb Simcha Bunim, he noticed the two servants coming up and the Yid was holding a burning candle (Chilul Shabbos), and the Goy was holding the wine (יין נסך). Reb Simcha Bunim exclaimed: “Now I understand the double phrase in the pasuk דור עקש ופתלתל – a perverse and twisted generation – if the goy would have held the candle in his hand and the Yid would have carried the wine then everything would have been in order. But now, when the Yid carried the candle and the Goy the wine, this means ‘perverse and twisted!”.
