CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת נשא
Parshas Nasso
ואיש את קדשיו לו יהיה (נשא ה:י)
A man’s holies shall be hisThe “Pe’er Yisroel” – Reb Yisroel Shulem Yosef of Bahush Zt”l once traveled with his son-in-law, Reb Menachem Mendel of Bahush Zt”l. On the way home, Reb Menachem Mendel noticed that his tallis and tefillin had suddenly vanished. He was very distraught about it. The Pe’er Yisroel asked him what happened, and Reb Menachem Mendel said that his tallis and tefillin were stolen.
The Pe’er Yisroel asked: “Are the tallis and tefillin your own?” Reb Menachem Mendel replied, “No, they were not mine. I received them as a ירושה – inheritance.”
His father-in-law consoled him, saying: “If so, they will surely be returned to you! Since such an occurrence happened with Reb Nochum Ber’nu Zt”l. He once lost an heirloom, and the old Sadigora Rebbe zt”l said, “A Yerusha is bound to come back to its rightful inheritor”. So it was, and the lost property was returned.
The tzaddikim continued their travels and arrived to the city of Yas (Iași, Romania), where they spent the night. The following morning, when they came to the Bahush Shul in Yas, they found the lost tefillin lying on a table. After investigating, they learned that a non-Jew had found the tefillin bag. Noticing it was a Jewish item, he brought it to the closest shul in his town, which – by Divine providence was a Shteeble of the Bahush Chasidim. The congregants of that shul recognized the tefillin as those that were lost from Reb Menachem Mendel of Bohush and they sent it by express train to the Bohush shul in Yas, so that when Reb Menachem Mendel arrived, he could already Daven Shacharis with his own tallis and tefillin.
“A Yerusha is bound to come back to its rightful inheritor.”
The Pe’er Yisroel then explained the words in this passuk “ואיש את קדשיו לו יהיה” – if the heirloom comes back to its inheritor, then for sure Midos Tovos (good traits) that a person inherits from his parent, לו יהיה – will always remain his.
