CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת כי תבא
Parshas Ki Savo
ובאת אל הכהן אשר יהיה בימים ההם (כי תבא כו:ג)
You shall come (with Bikkurim) to whoever will be the Koehn in those days.
When the holy Yismach Moshe zt”l served as the Rav in Shinova, there was a wealthy person, a chassid named Reb Yaakov Chossid. When the Yismach Moshe went to visit the Chozeh of Lublin zt”l, Reb Yaakov Chossid sent with him as a present to the Chozeh, a nice Tabbik Pushka – box with snuff. While traveling, the Yismach Moshe thought to himself that when the Gemara says, “המביא דורון לתלמיד חכם כאילו מקריב ביכורים” – one who brings a gift to a Torah scholar it is reckoned as if he sacrificed Bikurim (כתובות קה) – it does not say “הנותן” – the one who gives, only “המביא” – the one who brings. The Yismach Moshe deduced from this that, in reality, he is now bringing Bikurim.
When the Yismach Moshe arrived to the holy Chozeh of Lublin with the Tabbik Pushka, he smelled the Tabbik – tobacco – and exclaimed: “Ah! The smell of Bikurim!”
