CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת ויקהל
Parshas Vayakhel
וביום השביעי יהיה לכם קודש (ויקהל לה:ב)
And the seventh day shall be holy for you.
Reb Avraham Meshulach zt”l from Yerushalayim of yesteryear used to travel to raise funds for Torah institutions in the newly established developments in Yerushalayim. He once spent Shabbos in Istanbul, Turkey, where he was invited by a Yid to eat the Friday Night meal at his home. The family sat down to eat the Shabbos meal without reciting Kiddush. Reb Avraham asked his host why he had not recited Kiddush.
Embarrassed, the Yid replied: “I will tell you the truth, I do not know how to read Hebrew, and I would not remember the words by heart.”
On Sunday morning, before leaving, Reb Avraham told his host: “It is a shame that you do not recite Kiddush. I have an idea for you to remember the words. From today on, call your eldest son “יום,” your second son “השישי” and the third “ויכולו” and so forth with the rest of your family…and from now on, you will remember the words of Kiddush.
A while later, Reb Avraham returned to Istanbul and was again invited by this Yid. During Kiddush the Yid recited: “יום ויכולו הארץ.” Reb Avraham asked why he left out the words “השישי and השמים”? The Yid innocently replied: What should I do? “השישי’ is married, and “השמים” is not home this week for Shabbos.”
