CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת תולדות
Parshas Toldos
וישמר משמרתי (תולדות כו: ה)
And observed my safeguards
The Gaon Reb Boruch Ber, the Kaminitzer Rosh Yeshiva zt”l, was known for his greatness in Torah, thought-provoking shiurim, Avodas Hashem – servitude to Hashem, Chassidus – piety – and abstaining from mundane matters.
When his Rebbetzin used to go away on vacation, a bochur from his Yeshiva would prepare the meals for the Rosh Yeshiva in her stead. One day, a bochur asked the Rosh Yeshiva what he would prefer, a “Milchig” – dairy – or “Fleishig” – meat – meal.”
The Rosh Yeshiva replied, “We prefer Fleishigs”.
The bochur was surprised by the Rosh Yeshiva’s response since, knowing his Rosh Yeshiva, whose thoughts were far from food, why would he request a better meal?
The Rosh Yeshiva repeated his answer a few times, and the bochur took the courage to ask his Rebbe: “The Gemara says in (גיטין ע) that “סעודה שהנאתך ממנה, משוך ידך הימנה” – a meal that you derive enjoyment from it, pull your hands away (refrain) from it!”.
Reb Boruch Ber responded: “Chas V’Shalom! – Heaven forbid! – I do not prefer Fleishigs over Milchigs. I just wanted to eat a Fleishig meal so that I will not have an “עול” – be burdened about food for the next six hours!”
