CHASSIDISHE STORY ON THE PARSHA
פרשת חיי שרה
Parshas Chayei Sara
מה’ יצא הדבר (חיי שרה כד:נ)
Hashem, before Whom I have walked…
Maran Reb Aharon of Belz zt”l often repeated a saying from his father, Maran Reb Yissocher Dov of Belz zt”l, who in turn heard it from the Rebbe of Lublin zt”l: “A Shadchan who does his work לשם שמים – for the sake of Hashem, is a segula – (merit) for good children.
Reb Chaim Nota Katz zt”l once shared with Maran Reb Aharon of Belz zt’’l that he had arranged three shidduchim in one week. Maran Reb Aharon was very pleased and asked, “Did you earn any Shadchanus (money) for it?”
Reb Chaim Nota replied, “No! One shhidduch asked me to contribute money, and another borrowed my boots, which I don’t expect to get back.”
Upon hearing this, Maran Reb Aharon smiled and said, “My great-grandfather, the Sar Shalom of Belz zt”l, said: “One who does shidduchim for the sake of Hashem and doesn’t take money for it is a segula – merit for good children!”
Note: This does not mean a Shadchan should not accept money for their work, as Rebbes taught that shadchanus money is ‘kosher money.’ However, it is important not to pursue shidduchim solely for financial gain.
