VORT ON PIRKEI AVOS - פרק א : משנה א
Perek Aleph - Mishna Aleph
ועמך כולם צדיקים…
And My Nation are all tzaddikim - righteous people…
The holy Rash”ab of Lubavitch zt”l had a devout chassid named R’ Munia Mosenson a”h, who was dealing in diamonds and pearls.
The Rash”ab once praised the simple Yidden, and Reb Munia asked his Rebbe what he saw in the simple Yidden that the Rebbe praised them so highly.
The Rash”ab replied: “They have lots of specialties!”
Reb Munia replied: “I do not see anything special in them!”
After a few days, the Rashab asked Reb Munia to show him some of his pearls and diamonds. Reb Munia was very proud to show off his brilliant gems, and he displayed them on a table, pointing to one stone and saying, “This stone is so precious—you cannot find its match in both beauty and worth anywhere in the world!”
The Rash”ab exclaimed: “Interesting, I do not see anything special with this stone!”
Reb Munia replied: “To understand its worth and beauty, one has to be an expert, and the Rebbe does not understand stones. Therefore, the Rebbe cannot appreciate its value!”
The Rebbe replied with a chuckle: “To understand the worthiness of every Yid – one also needs to be a מבין – a maven!”
