VORT ON PIRKEI AVOS - פרק ד : משנה א
Perek Daled - Mishna Aleph
הלומד מכל אדם (אבות ד:א)
One who learns from every man
A simple Yid, a tailor named Elimelech, lived near the home of the holy Rebbe Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk zt”l. Elimelech – or Meilich,” as his wife used to call him – the tailor used to mend clothes for his clients, working assiduously until late into the night. One night, when Elimelech, the tailor, had a lot of clothes to mend, he fell asleep from sheer exhaustion. The Rebbe Reb Elimelech heard Elimelech, the tailor’s wife, waking him up: “Meilich, Meilich, quick – continue mending, as long as the candle is still burning!”
From that night on, the Rebbe Reb Elimelech used to repeat the words: “Meilich, Meilich, correct your Middos as long as your neshama is still inside you!” and said:“The words of the tailor’s wife seeped deeply into my bones.”
