הסתכל בשלשה דברים ואין אתה בא לידי עבירה, דע מאין באת, ולאן אתה הולך, ולפני מי אתה עתיד לתן דין וחשבון… (אבות ג:א)

Chazal list three things that can help a person conquer their Yetzer Hara, and the last piece of advice is to remember that you will die one day.  The advice to remember one’s death was given last since it causes fear in a person, and Hashem doesn’t want we should fulfill mitzvahs from fear. Therefore He commands mitzvahs through Simcha – happiness.  And if that doesn’t work, you can frighten a person with “יזכור לו יום המיתה”
