VORT ON PIRKEI AVOS - פרק ד : משנה י
Perek Daled - Mishna Yud
ועסוק בתורה והוי שפל רוח (אבות ד:י)
And you shall toil in Torah and be humble.
he Midrash says (קהלת א:לד): “The one who has one hundred, he now wants two hundred.” This means that when your bank statement shows the stately sum of one hundred, you are not happy anymore, as you immediately set your sight to double this amount”. The more one possesses, the more one craves, as his horizon has now expanded to another distant financial goal he hopes to reach. We learn from this Mishna that when it comes to spiritual gain – the opposite is true: The more we learn Torah, the more we understand how great HaShem is and – conversely – how diminutive we are against His greatness. This will open one’s eyes to even more expansive vistas of learning, showing him how much more can be attained – a humbling thought. Still, do not give up because of this; the opposite is true! The more you invest in your learning, the more you will come nearer to HaShem, creating a vicious circle of growth in learning and humility.
