VORT ON THE PARSHA
Parshas Ha'azinu

כי חלק ה’ עמו (האזינו לב:ט)
For Hashem’s portion is his people. It says in תנא דבי אליהו that one of Hashem’s middos is to be “שמח בחלקו – happy with His lot.” The Vilna Gaon zt’’l asks, how is it relevant to say that Hashem is pleased with his lot when the whole world belongs to Him? The trait of being happy with one’s lot only applies to someone who doesn’t have everything.
The Vilna Gaon answered that the part Hashem is satisfied with is His Nation – the Yidden. Hashem is pleased even when they are at a spiritual low. This is what the pasuk implies ‘כי חלק ה – the trait of Hashem that He is “שמח בחלקו” is with עמו – the Jewish nation He selected as His nation, no matter which level they’re on.
