VORT ON THE PARSHA
פרשת כי תשא
Parshas Ki Tisa
כי תשא את ראש בני ישראל לפקדיהם ונתנו איש כופר נפשו לה’ (כי תשא ל:יב)
When you take a census of the Yidden according to their numbers, every man shall give Hashem an atonement for his soul.
Why do the Yidden need to be counted? Since people die, the number of people constantly changes. The reason why people die is because of sin. As the Gemara says (שבת נה) one doesn’t die if he did not sin. It comes out that counting the Yidden reminds us of sin. That is why the Passuk says “כי תשא את ראש בני ישראל לפקדיהם” – if the Yidden are going to be counted, since people pass away and this reminds of sin, then:“ונתנו איש כופר נפשו לשם” – one needs a כפרה – an atonement, because you don’t die if you don’t sin.
