פרשת בשלח
Parshas Beshalach
ויקח משה את עצמות יוסף עמו (בשלח יג:יט)
Moshe took the bones of Yosef with him.
The Midrash says: The passuk “חכם לב יקח מצוות” – a wise man will would take mitzvos – refers to Moshe Rabbeinu. While all the other Yidden were busy collecting expensive items from their neighbors, Moshe was busy retrieving Yosef’s bones on his way out of Mitzrayim.
It is asked: The Passuk says “וישאלו איש מאת רעהו… כלי כסף וכלי זהב” – and they should borrow from their neighbor silver vessels and golden vessels. We can see from here that the Yidden were busy fulfilling a commandment – why does the Torah highlight this act of Moshe Rabbenu and not that the Yidden took along the expensive vessels they borrowed from their neighbors?
We learn from here that fulfilling a good deed causes loss, like Moshe, who was occupied with looking after Yosef – when he could have acquired riches – it is more praiseworthy than a mitzvah that one earns a profit from.
