למטה יששכר… (במדבר א:כט, לט)

Their count, for the tribe of Yissoschar: fifty-four thousand, four hundred… For the tribe of Zevulan, fifty-seven thousand, four hundred.

Since the Shevat (tribe) of Yissascher’s role was to פסק’ען – rule over the laws and answer questions, their total equaled to the word “דן- rule” = 54,000.  And Shevat Zevulin, whose task was to feed those who learned Torah. Their tally equals the word “זן – to feed” =57,000.
