למטה יששכר… ארבעה וחמישים אלף, וארבע מאות, פקודיהם… פקודיהם למטה זבולן שבעה וחמשים אלף וארבע מאות (במדבר א:כט-לט)
Their count, for the tribe of Yissoschar: fifty-four thousand, four hundred… For the tribe of Zevulan, fifty-seven thousand, four hundredSince the Shevat (tribe) of Yissascher’s role was to rule over the laws and answer questions, their total equaled to the word “דן- rule” = 54,000. Shevat Zevulin’s task was to feed those who learned the Torah. Their tally equals the word “זן – to feed” =57,000.
