VORT ON THE PARSHA
פרשת עקב
Parshas Eikev
מה ה’ אלקיך שואל מעמך כי אם ליראה…(עקב י:יב)
What does Hashem, your G-d, ask of you? Only to fear Hashem
A person who fears Hashem – Hashem becomes like a borrower (the Hebrew word “שואל” can be translated as “asks,” which is the literal meaning in our passuk, but the same word is also used for someone who borrows “שואל” from his friend and becomes a ‘borrower’ – “שואל”).
Just like a borrower has to watch over the thing he borrowed – more than he watches his possessions, so too, Hashem will do what a שואל does: He will watch over a ירא שמים – one who fears Hashem – with extra protection.
