Parshas Shlach
ויקרא משה להושע בן נון יהושע (שלח יג:טז)
And Moses called Hoshua the son of Nun “Yehoshua”.We learned in last week’s Parsha (בהעלותך) that Moshe was the humblest person on the face of the earth. When one looks carefully at the words in the Chumash, the following becomes apparent: Instead of writing “והאיש משה עניו מאד מכל האדם אשר על
פני האדמה” it says “והאיש משה ענו מאד מכל האדם אשר על פני האדמה” – the word “עניו” is written without the letter Yud: “ענו.” This missing letter was missing from the Torah! So, when the spies were chosen to represent their respective tribes to explore the promised land, Moshe noticed how Hoshea was so humble and, as a reward, added the missing letter “Yud” to his name, calling him “Yehoshua.”
