VORT ON THE PARSHA
פרשת שמות
Parshas Shemot
ותקרא שמו משה ותאמר כי מן המים משיתהו (שמות ב:י)
And she called his name “Moshe,” as she said: “For I withdrew him from the water.”
Moshe Rabbeinu had ten names: “Moshe, Nesanal, Shmaya, Avi Socho, Avi Zenoach, Chaver, Yekusiel, Tovia, Yered, Avigdor.” If so, why does the Torah call him “Moshe” – a name given to him by the daughter of Pharaoh? The Torah wants to teach us the greatness of the midah of rachmanus – the trait of compassion. The reason she called him “Moshe” is because of her kindness “כי מן המים משיתהו” – she withdrew him from the river Nile and this is why the Torah explicitly uses this name.
