כי חלק ה’ עמו (האזינו לב:ט)

It says that one of the middos of Hashem is the trait of “שמח בחלקו” – being happy with His lot (תנא דבי אליהו פ”א). Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin zt”l once asked his Rebbe, the Vilna Gaon zt”l, how is the middah of Sameach Bechelko applicable to Hashem – the whole world is His, and Sameach B’chelko only applies to someone that does not have everything? The Vilna Gaon replied: Hashem is happy that the Yidden are His Nation, no matter what ruchniasdig – spiritual – level they are at.  This is alluded to in the passuk: כי חלק ה’ עמו – Hashem is happy with His lot – which is עמו – His nation – the Yidden, and He is always pleased that He chose them as His nation, no matter the level they are at.
