VORT ON THE PARSHA
פרשת שופטים
Parshas Shoftim
כי ימצא באחד שעריך… אשר יעשה הרע בעיני ה’ אלקיך לעבור בריתו וילך ויעבוד אלהים אחרים… (שופטים יז:ב)
If there will be found among you in one your cities… who commits evil deeds in the eyes of Hashem your G-d to violate his covenant…
The words “בעיני ה’ אלקיך” need explaining: It would imply that this evil is only in the eyes of HaShem – no one else is aware of this evil. This teaches us that when one transgresses by serving idols, then the concept of “מחשבה רעה נחשבת כמעשה” – the mere thought to commit idolatry is already considered as if one has factually served idols. As seen in this passuk: “אשר יעשה הרע בעיני ד’ אלקיך”: only HaShem knows what a person thinks, and even the thought of sinning “עבירה גוררת עבירה” – one sin leads to the next until he ends up violating the covenant and leaves to worship Avodah Zarah – לעבור בריתו וילך ויעבוד אלהים אחרים.
