כי יהיה בך אביון מאחד אחיך (ראה טר:ז)

The Mekor Boruch of Seret-Viznitz zt’’l once visited Maran Reb Aharon of Belz zt’’l in Tel Aviv. He related that he heard from Maran Reb Yissocher Dov of Belz zt’’l, that when a person goes collecting money alone for tzedakah, from the four ends of the city, it serves as a reckoning for all the sins deserving the four prohibitions that warrant the four deaths of Beis Din – collecting tzedakah serves as a repentance for grave sins.

When Maran Reb Aharon of Belz heard this, his face went pale and he lifted the four ends of his beketcha, and exclaimed with enthusiasm: “This is what my father said? I’m asking you to repeat his holy words!” The Mekor Boruch repeated the words to Maran Reb Aharon.
